Troy University Head Football Coach, Larry Blakeney, returns to the New Horizons Credit Union 1st & 10 Club on Sept. 15 at Heron Lakes Country Club in Mobile, AL beginning at 5:30 p.m. He previously spoke to the club in 2008, 2009 and 2011.

Blakeney is entering his 24th season leading the Troy University football program and stands as the longest serving, most successful head coach in the history of Troy University. In 2011, the university honored him by naming the field at Veterans Memorial Stadium the Larry Blakeney Field.

During his 23 seasons as head coach of the Trojans, he has led his team to a 175-104-1 record, the third best winning percentage among all programs in the state of Alabama. Blakeney has coached his team in five bowl games, including the January 2010 GMAC Bowl, and claimed five consecutive conference titles from 2006-2010. He has led the Trojans to 49 Sun Belt Conference wins, the most of any team in the league.

Throughout his career, Blakeney has received many accolades and been named to four separate Halls of Fame, including the Troy University Hall of Fame and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. He was named Coach of the Year by the Southland Football League in 1999 and 2000 and by the Sun Belt Conference in 2008 and 2009.

Blakeney, a 1970 graduate of Auburn University, was a three-year letterman in football and also lettered in baseball.  He was the first sophomore quarterback to ever start for Ralph “Shug” Jordan. Blakeney began his coaching career at the prep level before returning to his alma mater. He filled a variety of coaching roles during his 14 seasons with the Tigers.

Blakeney is a native of Gordo, Ala. and is married to Janice Powell. The couple has three daughters and five grandchildren.
